Are Smart Thermostats Worth It in Florida?

5 min readIsles Mechanical

We get asked about smart thermostats on almost every residential tune-up. The honest answer is: they are worth it in Florida, but the savings depend less on the brand and more on three specific features. Here is what we install and why.

What actually saves money in Florida

  • Humidity control, not just temperature. The single biggest comfort win in SW Florida is pulling moisture out of the air. A thermostat that can call for dehumidification (overcool + reheat, or variable-speed control) is worth the upgrade. Ecobee's "Feels Like" and Honeywell's T10 humidity control both do this well.
  • Variable-speed compatibility. If your system is a communicating variable-speed unit (newer Trane, Carrier Infinity, Lennox iComfort), you want a thermostat that speaks the manufacturer's protocol — not a generic 24V stat. Mis-matching kills half the efficiency gains you paid for.
  • Remote sensors. Florida homes often have a warm bedroom at the end of a long duct run. A $40 remote sensor in that room, averaged with the hallway stat, solves the problem without rebalancing the ducts.

What doesn't matter as much as the marketing suggests

  • "AI" learning schedules. Most SW-Florida households have variable schedules anyway. A simple time-of-day schedule works 95% as well.
  • Voice assistant integration. Nice to have. Not the reason the thermostat pays for itself.
  • Ultra-slim design. A thermostat is on a wall you see once a day. Spend the money on features, not looks.

What we install most

  • Ecobee Premium — best overall for single-zone homes. Built-in remote sensor, excellent humidity handling, plays well with most brands.
  • Honeywell T10 Pro — our pick for multi-zone and bigger homes. Better remote-sensor ecosystem; pro-configurable.
  • Sensi Touch 2 — budget-friendly, reliable, no subscription. A good choice if you don't need humidity control.
  • Pro1 IAQ — the stat we install in rental properties. Lockable, simple, cheap to replace.

Integration with Apple, Google, Alexa

Ecobee and Honeywell both integrate cleanly with Apple Home, Google Home, and Alexa. We wire and configure the integration during install — most customers aren't interested in doing it themselves, and the setup guides are surprisingly fussy.
